pH meters
The pH meter is the instrument that tells you whether your irrigation water is in the correct range for your cannabis plants to absorb nutrients. A poorly adjusted pH blocks nutrient uptake even if your fertiliser is perfect, so it's worth measuring it at each watering with reliable equipment.

pH meters from leading brands in the sector: Bluelab, Hanna, Milwaukee and Adwa. Choosing the right one depends on your growing style, how often you measure and your budget.
How to choose your pH meter
By format you have three main options:
- Pocket meter (pen type): digital, economical and precise; the most common for checking irrigation water before each application.
- Continuous meter with probe: installed permanently in the reservoir and monitors pH in real time, ideal for hydroponics or large-scale crops.
- Drop meter (reagent): the most economical option; sufficient for outdoor growing, though less precise than a digital meter.
For digital meters, make sure they include automatic temperature compensation (ATC), a resolution of 0.1 pH and, in the higher range, a replaceable probe, which saves you changing the whole device when the electrode runs out. By brand, Bluelab is the reference for reliability and durability, Hanna and Milwaukee offer excellent value for money on precision, and Adwa is a solid entry point to get started.
Optimum pH for cannabis growing
The correct range depends on the medium: in soil, maintain pH between 6.0 and 7.0 (optimum around 6.5); in hydroponics and coco, between 5.5 and 6.5. Outside those values nutrient lockout occurs and the plant stops assimilating certain elements even though they are present in your fertiliser. The first signs of uncontrolled pH are chlorosis, leaf spots and stunted growth. Always measure after adding nutrients, because they modify the pH of the solution, and bear in mind the growing medium you use, as it also influences the pH of the rhizosphere.
Calibration and maintenance of your meter
A meter is only accurate if it is properly calibrated. Calibrate it regularly using calibration solutions of pH 4.0 and 7.0, keep the probe in its storage solution (never dry or in distilled water) and clean it after each use to extend its lifespan.
