Dehumidifiers for Growing
The relative humidity of your grow space is one of the important factors in the climate for your plants. Depending on the location and grow space, you may need to use a dehumidifier to reduce the % humidity in the environment.
Why use a dehumidifier in indoor growing?
Excess humidity is one of the most common problems in grow rooms and tents and controlling it is essential in any indoor growing setup. Plants constantly transpire, increasing relative humidity, which can lead to:
- Appearance of mould and fungi (botrytis, powdery mildew).
- Difficulty in nutrient absorption.
- Growth delays and harvest loss.
A dehumidifier allows you to develop a more stable environment for your plants, especially during critical flowering and drying phases, where excess humidity can cause complications.
When is a dehumidifier necessary?
Whenever you want to control the relative environmental humidity parameter, which is the case in most situations. In sealed rooms and drying areas dehumidifiers are always necessary, whilst in tents and grow spaces with air renewal they can be optional, although they always offer the grower the ability to control the environment.
The recommended humidity parameters depending on each growing stage are:
- Germination and cuttings: 65–75 %
- Vegetative phase: 50–60 %
- Flowering: 40–50 %
- Drying: 50–55 %
How to choose the right dehumidifier
In general terms, selecting the correct dehumidifier for your indoor growing is a critical decision: it's not enough to look at the power in litres/day, you need to analyse key factors such as:
- Moisture extraction capacity: Each dehumidifier has a maximum extraction capacity per day that allows you to determine its compatibility with the space and conditions.
- Plant transpiration: It is usually taken into account that the irrigation input in a grow is equal to the total generation of relative humidity minus the excess irrigation from drainage. That is, if you irrigate with 10L and 1L drains, you should be able to extract 9L per day from the environment.
- Modularity: In medium and large grows, using multiple units allows you to standardise the relative humidity parameter throughout the entire growing space.
Tips for use and maintenance
- Place the unit in the centre of the space or in areas with greater condensation.
- Avoid placing it against walls or corners.
- Clean filters and water tanks frequently.
- Use hygrometers or climate controllers to automate switching on/off.
- Complement with fans to distribute air evenly.
