Resin extraction

Cannabis resin extractions concentrate the active compounds present in the plant's trichomes, removing plant matter and resulting in highly prized products (hash, rosin, wax, shatter, BHO…). There are two main methodologies: solventless extraction and solvent extraction. We explain everything below.

Cannabis Resin Extraction

Resin extractions allow you to concentrate the best of cannabis: cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids.

Different methods (with or without solvents) are used to extract cannabis resin to separate trichomes from plant material, resulting in incredible products such as hash, wax, shatter, budder, tinctures…

At Growlobby you'll find everything you need to make your own extractions, whether you're looking for artisanal purity or prefer more technical and powerful yield.

Types of Resin Extraction

Solventless Extraction

Mechanical methods that use no chemicals and separate trichomes through agitation, pressure, cold or sieving; such as dry sifting, Ice or Iceolator or the Rosin method. Ideal for those seeking safety, cleanliness and immediate results.

  • Dry Sift (Dry Sift): Dry cannabis is rubbed over mesh or sieves. Pollen or kief is obtained, which can be pressed to make traditional hash.

  • Rosin Tech: It involves applying heat and pressure to buds or hash to squeeze out its resin. You'll need a rosin press, filter bags and non-stick paper.

  • Iceolator (Bubble Hash): Flowers are agitated in ice-cold water to dislodge trichomes, which are then filtered using mesh screens of various micron sizes.

Advantages of Using No Solvents: Disadvantages of Using No Solvents:
  • Zero risk of toxic residues.
  • Suitable for home growing and personal extractions.
  • Products ready to consume without purging or additional refinement.
  • Lower yield.
  • Greater presence of plant material if not filtered correctly.

Solvent-Based Extraction

These methods use chemical solvents (fluids such as butane, CO₂ or ethanol) to dissolve and separate active compounds from the cannabis plant. They require purging and precautions, but offer great potency and yield. These are the four most well-known methods.

  • BHO (Butane Hash Oil): allows you to obtain shatter, wax, crumble or budder.

  • Supercritical CO₂: selective and very efficient, used in professional laboratories.

  • Ethanol: economical and effective, though less selective.

  • ISO Wash: fast and potent, but requires complete purging of residues.

Advantages of Solvent-Based Resin Extraction: Disadvantages of Solvent-Based Resin Extraction:
  • Higher yield per volume of material.
  • Possibility of obtaining extracts of very high potency and purity.
  • Never use near an open flame.
  • Always use in well-ventilated spaces or with closed systems.
  • Purging mandatory to avoid toxic residues.
