Which is the Most Productive Cannabis Plant?
Finding the most productive cannabis is one of the great pursuits of any grower, both for indoor and outdoor cultivation. Production depends on genetics, but also on technique: a good variety poorly grown yields little, and a productive variety well managed can double your harvest. In this guide we review the most productive varieties, which ones perform best in each environment and how to increase production step by step.
If your priority is not yield but plant size, we have a dedicated guide to the largest cannabis plants. To start choosing, take a look at our feminised seeds.

What production depends on
Before choosing a variety, it's worth knowing what really moves the yield needle:
- Genetics: sets the ceiling for plant production.
- Environment: outdoors you get more grams per plant (unlimited space and light); indoors it's measured by g/m² and you gain control.
- Light: intensity and hours. It's the factor that most conditions bud weight.
- Pot and roots: larger substrate volume, larger plant and more harvest.
- Growing technique: pruning, staking and nutrition can significantly increase yield.
The most productive cannabis varieties
This is our selection of high-yield varieties, with their production data indoors and outdoors:
| Variety | Genetics | Indoor production | Outdoor production | Flowering | THC |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monster | Sativa ~80% | 500-1,000 g/m² | up to 2,800 g/plant | 9-10 weeks | ~14-17% |
| Critical | Indica ~60% | 500-650 g/m² | up to 1,300 g/plant | 7-8 weeks | ~18% |
| Amnesia | Sativa ~70% | 600 g/m² | up to 1,200 g/plant | 10-11 weeks | ~20% |
| Cheese | Indica dominant | 450-550 g/m² | up to 1,000 g/plant | 9-10 weeks | ~15-18% |
| Big Bud | Indica ~85% | ~550 g/m² | ~600 g/plant | 8-9 weeks | Medium |
| Gorilla Glue #4 | Balanced hybrid | 500-600 g/m² | ~600-700 g/plant | 8-9 weeks | Very high (~24%) |
Monster
It lives up to its name: it's one of the most productive varieties in the world outdoors, with harvests reaching up to 2,800 g per plant thanks to its thick main stem and branches laden with buds. Indoors it doesn't disappoint either, ranging between 500 and 1,000 g/m². Sativa dominant (~80%), 9-10 week flowering and cerebral effect. Its enormous stature makes it ideal for outdoor cultivation.
Critical
One of the great benchmarks for fast production: up to 1,300 g/plant outdoors and 500-650 g/m² indoors, with a flowering period of just 7-8 weeks. Slightly Indica dominant (~60%), citrus aroma with lemon notes and skunk lineage. Its buds are heavy so staking is recommended. You can get it as Critical Kush from Barney's Farm or in bulk format.
Amnesia
Sativa dominant (~70%) with THC close to 20% and production of 600 g/m² indoors and up to 1,200 g/plant outdoors, where it performs better. It's also very tall — it can exceed 3 metres — so it also appears among the largest plants. Potent and long-lasting effect, first stimulating then relaxing. Available as Amnesia Haze.
Cheese
A British classic Indica dominant, with production of 450-550 g/m² indoors and up to 1,000 g/plant outdoors. Its hallmark is a pungent aged cheese aroma, so penetrating. Relaxing effect. You can try the Cheese Auto from Barney's Farm.
Big Bud
Indica dominant (~85%) with compact structure designed to maximise yield in small spaces: ~550 g/m² indoors with short 8-9 week flowering. Dense, voluminous buds, relaxing effect and fruity aroma. One of the best choices when indoor yield is the goal.
Gorilla Glue #4
Balanced hybrid with very high THC (~24%) and production of 500-600 g/m² indoors, with resin-coated buds. 8-9 week flowering and robust structure that responds very well to SCROG. Ideal if you want potency and yield at the same time: check out Gorilla Glue #4 in the shop.
Most productive cannabis indoors
Indoors, production is measured in grams per square metre (g/m²) and control takes priority: manageable varieties, compact stature and short flowering. Big Bud, Gorilla Glue #4 and Critical stand out, capable of exceeding 500-600 g/m² without growing excessively tall. The key is to provide intense light and make the most of the space with staking techniques. Choose from our feminised indoor seeds.
Most productive cannabis outdoors
Outdoors there's no ceiling: production is measured in grams per plant and the figures soar. Monster (up to 2,800 g/plant), Critical (1,300 g) and Amnesia (1,200 g) are amongst the most productive outdoors, as is Moby Dick. To get the most from them, plant early in spring and give them the largest root volume possible; our bulk seeds are a good option for large crops.
How to increase your plant production
Genetics sets the ceiling, but technique decides how much of that potential you reach. These are the highest-impact levers:
- Sufficient light: indoors, prioritise intensity (powerful LED/HPS) and good distribution; outdoors, maximum direct sun exposure.
- Pruning and SCROG staking: a net distributes light among all buds and supports weight; apical pruning multiplies flowering points.
- Lollipopping: remove lower vegetation that receives little light so the plant concentrates energy on the upper buds.
- Large pot: more substrate volume = more roots = more harvest.
- Nutrition and climate: keep EC and pH in range, increase phosphorus and potassium during flowering and control humidity (VPD) to bulk up buds without fungus.
- Harvest at the right time: check trichomes to harvest at maximum weight and potency.
You'll find more techniques in our cannabis growing guide.
Most productive autoflowering cannabis
Feminised seeds generally offer more production than autoflowering varieties, but autos have advanced a lot and allow multiple harvests per year in much less time. If you're interested in this route, we've compiled the best ones in our post on most productive autoflowering varieties, and you'll find them all in the autoflowering seeds category.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams does a cannabis plant produce?
It varies enormously depending on the variety, environment and technique. As a reference, indoors it ranges between 400 and 600 g/m² (reaching over 1,000 g/m² with varieties like Monster), and outdoors a productive plant can yield from a few hundred grams to more than 2 kg under optimal conditions.
Does a feminised or an autoflowering plant produce more?
Generally, feminised produces more per plant; autoflowering compensates with a shorter cycle and the possibility of more harvests per year.
Is more produced indoors or outdoors?
Outdoors you get more grams per plant thanks to space and sun; indoors you produce less per plant but with more control and multiple harvests per year.
What is the most productive variety outdoors?
Among our selection, Monster yields the most outdoors, with harvests that can approach 3 kg per plant, followed by Critical and Amnesia.
