BHO is a highly resinous cannabis concentrate extracted using solvents, in this case separated from plant matter through the use of butane. Before explaining how to make BHO at home, it should be noted that, as it is a concentrate made using butane, certain precautions must be taken as this is highly flammable, and dangerous and unpleasant accidents can occur.

These are the precautions that must be taken during the extraction process:

• Do not carry out this process in closed rooms, preferably outdoors and away from any heat source.
• Avoid radiation, such as that emitted by mobile phones, computers or any other object capable of producing a spark.
• Protect your hands and face.
  • For your hands we recommend using gloves, preferably leather or some organic material, as synthetic or latex gloves tend to melt in case of accident, potentially causing serious burns to the skin.
  • For your face we recommend covering your eyes with closed goggles to protect them in case of explosion.
• Do not smoke in the area where you are extracting, as butane is suspended in the air and the moment you light a lighter you could cause a serious accident.

How to make homemade BHO with gas?

• Borosilicate glass tube, steel, etc. A Honey bee BHO extractor would be perfect.
• Pyrex tray.
• Container larger than the tray to carry out purging using a water bath. In case you are looking for a more professional result, you will need a desiccator and a vacuum pump.
• Butane gas canisters without impurities such as Colibrí gas.
• A double spatula, specially designed for collecting this type of concentrate, or a razor blade (this is less recommended as it is dangerous and can scratch the Pyrex, contaminating the concentrate).
• Silicone mat or silicone jar for handling BHO.
• A dabber to texture our BHO.
• BHO filter mesh (optional)

BHO extraction step by step:

• Step 1: To achieve our homemade BHO extraction, first insert plant matter into the BHO extraction tube so that it is packed, but without overdoing the pressure so that butane can circulate well through the tube.
• Step 2: Although the butane is cold, it is recommended to place the tube in the freezer for 24 hours (when working with small amounts) as this will help the resin to separate from the plant matter properly.
• Step 3: Next, prepare your work area and sanitise the instruments you are going to use, preferably using isopropyl alcohol.
• Step 4: Remove the tube from the freezer (if you've done this) and insert the nozzle of the gas canister into the extraction tube slot, completely emptying the contents of the canister. It is advisable to wait for the tube to empty completely as, with the plant matter quite compressed, the gas takes its time to escape.
• Step 5: Once we have the tray full of liquid (butane + resin) we will carry out a first purging. How to purge BHO at home? At 40°C, filling the larger container with water at this temperature and placing the tray inside to carry out a water bath for a few hours whilst maintaining a stable temperature. You will notice that your BHO stops producing bubbles, which is a sign that our extraction is free of gas.
  • In case you proceed with a vacuum machine and desiccator, we will introduce the BHO into the desiccator, activating the vacuum pump plugged into it and you will observe how the product begins to grow as if it were yeast, producing holes in the extraction similar to those that appear in Gruyère cheese, leaving our extraction with an appearance similar to the lunar surface. When it stops generating holes, it means that the gas has been completely expelled from our extraction.
• Step 6: Now it is time to carry out a 2nd purging at 45°C while maintaining a stable temperature. We observe that bubbles appear again; with the dabber we will proceed to pop them so that the remaining gas escapes, leaving our BHO free from impurities and gas, ensuring that the product we collect is completely safe for human consumption.
• Step 7: Now we will proceed to texture our homemade BHO to taste. We can leave it as it is, or take the dabber and start separating by pulling upwards from the concentrate, as if we were kneading the extraction, in order to unify the texture. The process is similar to unifying a pizza dough or pasta, obtaining waxier and lighter results than if we simply let it rest.

How to make homemade BHO without gas?

It could be considered that it is not exactly BHO because the main ingredient of this is butane, but we can make an extraction by folding parchment paper with a little cannabis inside. We simply press it for one or two minutes; we can use a heat press or another heat applicator. We can repeat the process 2 or 3 times.
