Description

A reverse osmosis unit doesn’t break down all at once: it dies slowly. The EC of the output water rises a point, the flow rate drops without anyone noticing, and one day the nutrient solution no longer comes out as it did before. This pack contains all the filter elements of the Reverse Osmosis Filter with Water Master Pump in its 3000 L/day version.

What’s in the pack

There are five pieces and each one does a different job, in this order:

The sediment filter goes first and traps sand, oxide and suspended particles; it gets the dirtiest and protects all the others. Behind it are two stages of carbon: the granulated activated carbon, which removes chlorine and organic compounds at high flow rate, and the carbon block, denser and with a finer passage for what escapes the previous one. These three stages exist for one reason only: so the membrane doesn’t receive chlorine, because chlorine destroys it.

The 3000 L reverse osmosis membrane is the expensive piece and the one that really lowers the water mineralisation. The set is completed by an inline activated carbon filter at the outlet, which is the same for the 400, 1100 and 3000 L units.

When to change them

The manufacturer’s indicative schedule for this unit is 6 to 12 months for the pre-filters, 12 months or about 19,000 litres for the carbon and 2 or 3 years for the membrane, always depending on the hardness of the incoming water.

But the schedule is the least of it: what matters are two measurements. If the EC of the output water rises compared to what it gave when freshly installed, the membrane is letting salts through. If what drops is the flow rate, it’s usually the pre-filters, which are saturated and choking the system. Note down both figures the day you install the new filters and you’ll have a real reference to compare against.

That’s why this pack makes sense as a complete overhaul, not as six-monthly maintenance: if you only need to replace pre-filters, replacing a membrane that still works is just throwing money away.

Why the starting water conditions everything

With osmosed water you start from a known and low EC, so the conductivity you measure after fertilising is that of your fertiliser and not the mains. That means fewer pH corrections, more repeatable doses between waterings and fewer deposits in drippers and pipes.

Bear in mind that a 3000 L/day unit produces more than is consumed in one go, so it needs storage: you have the full range in water storage tanks for irrigation, and the rest of consumables in irrigation filters.
