Description
The reflector is the component that works hardest and gets checked least often. Positioned just centimetres from a 1000 W lamp, it accumulates dust and spray residue, and every point of reflectivity lost is light your crop stops receiving despite the same electrical consumption. This is the original Ultra Optics 98 replacement for Dimlux Expert Series MKII luminaires, in the reflectors section.
98 % is not a marketing number
The material is Miro Silver: aluminium with several nanometre-thick optical coatings applied in a vacuum chamber. That treatment is what brings reflectivity up to 98 %, whereas quality anodised aluminium sits around 86–87 %.
The scale is evident in the catalogue itself: the anodised Azerwing declares 86 % and high-end reflectors hover around 96 %. Twelve percentage points difference on equipment consuming 1000 W is not a cosmetic detail: it is light you have already paid for on your bill, and it either reaches the plant or it does not.
A single bounce
The geometry follows the SBCS (Single Bounce Clear Sight) principle: it is calculated so that light touches the surface just once before heading towards the crop. The absence of secondary bounces matters for two reasons. The first is obvious: each additional bounce loses a percentage of light. The second is less so: light bouncing back towards the lamp overheats it and shortens its life.
The open design allows the lamp to cool by convection, and if you work in a closed room you have a 50 mm port to connect extraction and remove hot air before it spreads through the room.
When to replace it
A reflector does not warn you when it fails because it keeps lighting. The signs are visual: a dull or milky surface where there was once a mirror, stains that will not come off with a cloth, heat marks or any deformation. Accidents also count—the silly kind that happen more often than you would think in a grow room.
As a rule, if you are going to disassemble the luminaire to change the reflector, take the opportunity to check the lamp: a double-ended bulb loses output over the hours even if it still lights, and you will find them in grow bulbs. Changing both at once restores the equipment to day-one performance for a fraction of what a new luminaire costs.
