Description
Dark Box competes in the tight price bracket of grow cabinets, but maintains the same bill of materials across the entire range: 600D fabric, 16 mm steel rods and plastic connectors, whether it's the 60x60 or the 3 x 3 metre model. What changes from one model to another is the surface area, not the quality of the cabinet.
Eight sizes, from 60x60 to 300x300
The two smallest —60x60x180 and 80x80x200— are starter cabinets or mother plant cabinets. The 120x60x180 solves narrow spaces, hallways or cupboards where a square won't fit. The bulk of home growing is in the 100x100x220 and 120x120x220, which already accommodate serious LED lighting and complete extraction. From there you're in commercial territory: 240x120, 200x200 and 300x300, all with 220 cm height.
One thing worth knowing before you buy: Dark Box cabinets cannot be joined together. If you plan to expand, it's better to go straight to the larger size than to buy two and join them. For cuttings and mother plants in vertical, the brand also has the Dark Box Propagator Tower, 120x40x200 cm.
600D, 16 mm rods and RoHS certification
600D is the fabric thread density: the higher it is, the more body the fabric has and the less it sags under the weight of equipment. The breakdown of materials gives an idea of what arrives at your door: in the 120x120x220 you get 6.9 kg of fabric and 4.5 kg of steel tubing, with RoHS certification and a reflective interior that also acts as thermal insulation.
The rods are 16 mm diameter with 0.8 mm wall thickness, a standard size: if you ever break a connector, the corners for 16 mm grow cabinet rods from Dark Box itself fit without adapters.
A frame for every component
It comes with ports for ventilation, lighting and watering, and assembles without a single tool: you slot the frame together, pull the cover over it and install equipment. The extraction always goes in first, so calculate the airflow before choosing the size — you'll find the extractors in the climate control category.
Next comes the odour filter hung from the ceiling and, if you're working horizontally, the SCROG net. Bear in mind that all that weight is supported by the upper rods: in the larger models distribute the load across several points rather than hanging everything from the centre.
