Description
A centrifugal air extractor is not a tubular under another name. The mixed-flow turbine works with higher pressure, which is exactly what you need when air has to pass through a carbon filter, two elbows and four metres of ducting before exiting. The Vanguard Hydroponics Centre covers that scenario across seven different sizes within the air extractors catalogue.
From 300 to 1,600 m³/h: which size fits you
The standard calculation is the room volume multiplied by 30–60 air changes per hour. A cabinet of 1.2 x 1.2 x 2 m is 2.9 m³, so the 125 mm (300 m³/h) is more than adequate; a room of 3 x 3 x 2 m requires around 720 m³/h and sits squarely in 200 mm (1,000 m³/h) territory. The big jump is at 315 mm, which at 1,600 m³/h is already room equipment, not cabinet equipment.
There is one detail often overlooked: the flow rate on any specification sheet is at free inlet. As soon as you hang a carbon filter and ducting, what it actually moves drops noticeably. If your calculation leaves you right on the edge of a model, go for the next size up.
Copper motor, 47–52 dB
All seven share the same design: copper motor combining axial and centrifugal flow, ABS impeller and polypropylene casing with double insulation. Vanguard's declared noise ranges from 47 dB on the 100 and 125 to 52 dB on the 315, and power consumption is between 68 and 165 W: the 315, despite moving the most air, draws just 150 W because it spins slower than the 200 and 250.
They run at a single speed. If you prefer it to start based on temperature or humidity rather than run continuously, that is solved with an external controller.
Horizontal or vertical mounting
They come with mounting feet and support both orientations, whether extracting or supplying fresh air. They come with 1.5 m of cable and connect to the line with extraction ducting and hose clips of the corresponding diameter.
One installation note that saves arguments with neighbours: a centrifugal unit transmits vibration to whatever is bolted to it. Hanging it with rubber straps or ties instead of fixing it rigidly to the structure reduces perceived noise far more than any specification sheet number; you'll find the parts in ventilation accessories.
