Description

Kaya Coir Grow Pot introduces a new format that replaces traditional hydrated coco. A 50-litre bag of coco takes up warehouse space. Forty of these pots, totalling almost 190 litres of substrate, fit in a single box: each one travels compressed to 3.3 centimetres thick.

From 3.3 centimetres to 15

The 5.5 inches in the name refers to the dry block, not the assembled pot: as it arrives it measures 14 x 14 x 3.3 cm. When moistened, the fibre swells to form a cube of 15 x 15 x 15 cm, roughly seven times its starting volume.

The procedure is straightforward, though it won’t tolerate rushing: stand the bag upright, moisten it evenly —with water or directly with nutrient solution— and let the fibre finish opening before planting. If you insert the cutting with the block half-expanded, the coco continues growing afterwards and displaces the root ball. It’s the same logic as any compressed coco, like the Jiffy Coco Block, with the difference that here the container serves as the pot.

RHP Coco, Washed and Buffered

The substrate is 100% coco fibre with RHP certification, the Dutch seal that audits horticultural substrates batch by batch. It goes through multiple washes to remove the salts that coco naturally carries and a buffering process, so it arrives with very low EC and a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. The rest of the options in the section are in substrates.

Those two processes are what separate quality coco from cheap coco. Unwashed fibre carries sodium and potassium that throw off your nutrient solution from the first watering, and unbuffered fibre sequesters calcium and magnesium during the first few weeks. Here you can feed from minute one with a specialist base like Canna Coco A+B without correcting anything beforehand.

36% Air

The two numbers that define a substrate are how much water it holds and how much air it lets through. This one declares 60-65% water retention and 36% air porosity, a high air proportion that’s exactly what you want in coco: it allows daily watering, or several times a day during flowering, without the root running short of oxygen. The trade-off is that it needs more frequent watering than peat, because it dries faster. At 4.73 litres we’re in the volume range for a freshly rooted cutting, small mother plant or autoflowering in tight space; for a long cycle you’ll need to pot up into a larger pot.
