Gro-Smart 78 Grodan Plugs Tray

Gro-Smart by Grodan is a dual-sided propagation tray used on whichever side suits each batch. It measures 51 x 24 cm, fits into standard 10 x 20 inch trays and is designed for the seedling and cutting stage. Sold loose, without plugs.

One tray, two sides

The 78-cavity side is designed to fit 40 x 40 x 40 mm plugs: each one sits snugly in its hole without tipping or resting on the next one. The Grodan Delta Rock Wool Plug in its 40 mm format fits perfectly, as do 1.5 inch A-OK or Macroplug type plugs.

The mesh side changes the use completely: it works for plug sheets, Mini-Blocks and Gro-Blocks when propagating directly in block. So one tray covers both loose plug cutting and block work.

How to use it for propagation

The key is in its elevated design: it keeps the rock wool above any water pooled in the lower tray, so the substrate drains and the root finds oxygen instead of waterlogging. The base is clear, so the root grows downward without hitting the bottom, something you notice in the uniformity of rooting.

Place it inside a 10 x 20 inch tray and, if you want to maintain high humidity during rooting, cover it with a propagator such as the VDL Propagation Greenhouse, whose 59 x 39 cm base fits rock wool trays. Being rigid plastic, it disinfects between batches and lasts many cycles.
